The Millennium Challenge Account-Jordan (MCA-Jordan), a company responsible to implement a $275 million grant by the US Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), was named winner of MCC's 2014 Country Commitment Award, which recognizes exemplary commitment to achieve MCC’s innovative and results-driven approach to development.
The Award was presented to MCA-Jordan CEO Eng. Kamal Zoubi during the 10th MCC anniversary signature event, MCC: A Decade of Driving Change and Delivering Impact, held on Nov 18, 2014 at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. The event was attended by development leaders from government, Congress, nongovernmental organizations and the private sector. It also featured two televised remarks by former President George W. Bush and President Barrack Obama.
“This award is a pride to Jordan. It is a result of the hard work and commitment to excellence by MCA-Jordan’s team. Particularly, the award recognizes As-Samra Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion as an example of country commitment and innovation within the field of infrastructure, technology, and finance. In addition, the award recognized MCA-Jordan’s savings of more than $16.4 million, which will be utilized to fund an additional 65 kilometers of wastewater network pipes as well as constructing and administrative building for the Water Authority of Jordan,” Eng. Kamal Zoubi said.
MCC funds three main projects within its compact in Jordan, all in Zarqa Governorate:
1) The Water Network Project, laying out around 800 km of new pipes to decrease leakage and increase supply of water to residents.
2) The Wastewater Network Project, providing over 300 km of new sewage pipes for the Zarqa Governorate water utility including Princess Haya neighborhood.
3) The expansion of As-Samra Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP),treating 70% of Jordan’s wastewater and producing clean treated water for irrigation in the Jordan River Valley.
